Nurse Notes- 1/10

Causes for sore throats include viruses, bacteria and allergens. Viruses are the most frequent cause. Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by A Streptococcus bacteria.

Symptoms
* Sore throat
* Fever that begins suddenly
* Red throat, sometimes with white patches
* Tender, swollen glands in neck
* Vomiting

Diagnosis
* Throat culture performed by medical professional
* Rapid strep test is quicker but is not as reliable

Transmission
* Spread by person-to-person contact
* Spread indirectly through articles soiled with nasal secretions or saliva
* Symptoms begin 1-3 days after exposure to illness

Treatment
* Antibiotics are prescribed and taken as directed by physician
* Student should remain home from school for 24-48 hours after starting the antibiotics
* Student should remain home until they are fever free for 24 hours (without fever reducing medication)
* Follow the course of treatment to prevent complications such as rheumatic fever

If your child develops symptoms similar to those of strep infection, please contact your physician. Inform the school nurse of a confirmed case. Remember that good hand washing is the number one way to prevent the spread of communicable disease.

Dogs on School Property

We appreciate that dogs are an important part of our families here at Dirksen.  We do have some children with significant allergies and/or significant fear of dogs.  We are asking that during arrival and dismissal dogs are kept off the direct paths or sidewalks where our students are passing through at these busy times.  We appreciate your help to make sure all of our students feel safe while on school property.

IAR Results

During the week of September 30th we will be sending home the results of the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) in English/language arts and math.  The IAR replaced Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and is a shorter assessment that students took online.  Your child’s score, as well as the school and district averages, will look much different than what you typically saw on previous state assessments.  It is important to note that the IAR scores are not comparable to the PARCC scores on previous state assessments.

Club Offerings at Dirksen

We know our students are excited about exploring their many different interests, such as:

Sign language, fitness, drama, science etc.  Please see the attached brochure that explains which clubs are offered throughout the year! Be on the lookout for sign up sheets throughout the year!
